The City of Pasadena, Public Works Department - Building Systems & Fleet Management Division is seeking a Public Works Superintendent with excellent leadership and interpersonal skills to manage, direct and organize the Fleet Maintenance section. The Public Works Superintendent also provides day-to-day management, including the preparation of fiscal, administrative and operational reports and recommendations. This position oversees a variety of personnel including fleet supervisors, equipment mechanics and parts technicians.

Essential Functions

• Organizes, assigns and reviews work in the repair, alteration and maintenance of public vehicles
• Periodically inspects work areas to ensure City standards and safety regulations
• Oversees the ordering of parts, materials and equipment for fleet maintenance
• Supervises and assigns work projects to subordinates, checks progress of work for quality and proper use of resources within budget limits
• Makes personnel adjustments in work assignments in line with changing priorities of projects and City needs
• Determines work assignments and utilization of personnel, equipment and materials; acquisitions supplies and materials
• Develops and prepares bid specifications for contract services
• Assists in developing long-range and short-term division objectives
• Prepares financial analysis and service objective reports
• Develops plans to meet future service needs
• Prepares section budget and control expenditures of allocated funds
• Evaluates work methods and operations
• Prepares estimates and monitors maintenance, and/or operating costs
• Evaluates division policies, procedures, and services to determine effectiveness, makes changes to increase effectiveness to meet departmental objectives
• Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements
• Coordinates training and evaluates employees
• Takes necessary disciplinary actions
• Investigates complaints related to area of assignment and initiates appropriate action
• May act on behalf of the division head
• Administers the B.I.T. vehicle inspection program
• Knowledge of the principles, operation, diagnosis, troubleshooting, and maintenance of electric vehicles
• Ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and maintain CNG and diesel engines
• Proficient in diagnosing and maintaining computer-controlled electrical and hydraulic systems
• Coordinates the maintenance and repair of unleaded, diesel and CNG fueling stations

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• Five years of increasingly responsible journey level field or administrative experience in maintenance operation
• Two (2) years in a supervisory and/or managerial capacity.
• College level course work in a related field is preferred.

SELECTION PROCESS

The selection process will consist of an evaluation of training and experience, and the most qualified candidates may be invited to participate in a written, oral, and/or performance examination. Probationary test period is one year.

There is currently one vacancy in the Public Works Department. As a result of the selection process, an eligible list will be established which will be used to fill this vacancy and other similar vacancies that may occur in the future.

Special Requirements

Must have or obtain a Class C California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record at time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment.

Depending on assignment, physical strength and agility to lift up to 50 - 75 lbs., bend in all directions, squeeze with arms and hands, pull and lower up to 50 lbs.
