POSITION SUMMARY

Marathon Petroleum Company is seeking a full-time Turnaround Specialist to lead the planning and execution of turnaround (TAR) events at the Mandan Refinery and Dickinson Renewable Diesel Facility, delivering work safely, on schedule, and on budget.

The successful candidate will need strong leadership, communication, interpersonal, organizational, critical and strategic thinking skills. They also must have strong safety leadership experience and drive for safety focus while planning and executing work.

Responsibilities include developing and managing all turnaround/project scope through schedule management and execution best practices.  Extended hours may be required during planning and execution phases.

This position is based in Mandan, ND and reports to the Turnaround & Construction Manager.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead turnaround scope development across all departments, challenging necessity and ensuring accurate capture in the Turnaround Work List
  • Review previous lessons learned and prior turnaround reports to understand problematic and successful past work practices and better develop turnaround work scope.
  • Review Work Scope Approval Forms, RFI’s, Engineering Project Request Form Log, Event Work List, and P6 Primavera schedule on a consistent basis to verify alignment.
  • Allocate planning and scheduling tasks amongst planners and ensure all work is planned in accordance with Turnaround scope and utilizes safety best practices while maximizing quality and efficiency
  • Support schedulers in development of manpower loading consistent with consistent with unit outage durations.
  • Develop overall manpower and equipment hiring plans with execution contractors.
  • Develop overall site logistics plan including master plot plan of cranes, BRM assignments, parking, bus routes, etc.
  • Review unit decontamination plans with operations to ensure comprehensive and safe turnover of the unit for maintenance.
  • Work with engineering to review new projects and give suggestions for constructability improvements.
  • Review turnaround Bill of Materials (BOM’s) to ensure all jobcard material is identified, ordered, and adherence with Marathon specifications.
  • Establish and facilitate reoccurring planning meetings documenting action items and meeting minutes to ensure accountability amongst other departments in regard to turnaround deliverables. Develops and facilitates the Plan of the Plan (POTP), engaging key stakeholders from all Refinery Departments for review and input on scope.
  • Participates in contracting strategy decisions and controls costs by applying contract terms.
  • Serves as a leader by directing start-of-shift meetings to align contractor tasks, setting execution priorities, engaging stakeholders to meet milestones and deliverables, driving adherence to the turnaround schedule, and ensuring safe execution of the work scope.
  • Review field progress, manpower needs, schedule compliance and cost trends to make adjustments to ensure completion on time and within budget.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Must have a HS Diploma or GED.

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field preferred.

  • Five (5) years or more experience in engineering, asset maintenance, major projects, construction or maintenance planning preferred.

  • Previous turnaround experience preferred.

  • A valid driver’s license is required. Routine travel between Mandan and Dickinson is required.

  • Must be able to physically perform the essential job functions including, but not limited to, wearing all required PPE, working at elevated heights, confined space entry, fall protection, and respirator usage.

  • The work schedule for this position is a Monday – Thursday 4/10 schedule. The position is expected to support a rotating on-call calendar approx. 4-6 weeks per year. Must be able to work additional hours to support construction events and turnarounds as required.

  • Must be authorized to work in the US on a full-time indefinite basis without the need for employment visa sponsorship now or in the future.

SKILLS

  • Must have working knowledge of common industry standards, codes and practices.
  • Must have working knowledge of how to read and understand schematic readings and P&IDs.
  • Must have strong initiative, leadership, and collaboration skills, with proactive troubleshooting and strategic/critical thinking to drive effective problem solving.
  • Must be able to function in a team environment and effectively communicate with personnel of all levels and across multiple disciplines to include Engineering, Operations, and Maintenance.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook required.
  • Experience with SAP, iTAR, P6 Primavera is preferred.
  • Knowledge of industry codes and standards applicable to major capital projects preferred.
