JOB BAND: C

CONTRACT TYPE: We have 4 roles in total to recruit for:

•    3 x Permanent, Full-time roles; and

•    1 x six month Fixed-term/attachment, Full-time (running to 26 March 2027).

DEPARTMENT: News & Current Affairs, BBC World Service Group

LOCATION: London, Shift work on a rota, including overnight, early-morning and late-evening shifts.

PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £36,000 - £39,000pa, plus London Weighting (£5,441pa), depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

BBC News Persian is one of the World Service’s largest language services, reaching an estimated weekly audience of around 25 million people in Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and around the world. As the leading international broadcaster in Iran, it provides trusted, impartial news and current affairs content across television, radio and digital platforms.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

  • Use a range of video, audio and digital equipment and information technology to research, write, assemble, edit and deliver outputs in the appropriate medium, to the highest professional standards.
  • May be required to present the content on radio, TV or on line. This might be live or recorded.
  • To undertake pre and post production and studio work, live and pre-recorded. Translate news, prepare contents for publication on the website or social media platforms, produce text, graphics for programmes, find and coordinate guests for news programmes, booking satellite slots for live broadcast and supporting field reporters as their producers.
  • Able to work in teams and shift work on a rota, including overnight, early-morning and late-evening shifts.
  • Take a lead within a team setting or on delivering a specific piece of journalism or project as appropriate.
  • To prioritise and plan activities taking into account all the relevant issues and factors such as deadlines staffing and resources available.

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Significant recent experience as a journalist, with a good knowledge of production techniques, to produce engaging packages through a range of production skills.
  • Native or equivalent fluency in modern standard Farsi, with excellent spoken and written skills, and fast, accurate typing under deadline and for various output platforms.
  • Full proficiency in written and spoken English, with effective communication skills.
  • Proven experience in creating stories and programmes for TV, various Online and Social media platforms. You will exercise sound editorial judgment in developing story ideas and producing accurate and impartial journalism to tight deadlines. You will need strong knowledge and interest in and also developments within the Persian digital market.
  • Passion for Iran, the region and international news, with deep knowledge of current affairs, history, social issues, business, arts, culture and sport.  This will be supported by a strong understanding of the BBC Persian news agenda and broader awareness of BBC strategy.
