Part-Time Faculty: SWK 600: LGBTQ Health and Well Being

The School of Education seeks an instructor to teach SWK 600 (M001) - LGBTQ Health and Well Being (3 credits), online 90-minute Synchronous Session w/asynchronous content management.

Course Description

This course will apply concepts from an ecological framework to understand the micro (biological, psychological, and social), mezzo (family, school, religious groups), macro (culture, community, institutions, organizations) and social forces (political, economic, ideological, religious) that impact on the health and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer populations.

Class is designed to address those complex issues by confronting the health disparities and health-seeking behaviors of LGBTQ people. It will examine health disparities, research, sampling and measurement methodologies involved in the study of LGBTQ populations, and the intersections of social identities/inequalities (such as those based on ethnicity, sexual orientation and sex/gender among others). Parts of class will explore LGBTQ community and issues ranging from HIV/AIDS to intimate partner violence, employment and housing. The course will focus on health among gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) populations from the perspective and theoretical framework of intersectionality, how the intersections of various identities such as race, ethnicity, socio-economic status result in different health outcomes. There will also be the opportunity to explore and evaluate the function of programs designed for rare, stigmatized and/or hidden populations and for consumers using such programs. The course seeks to help students understand the ethics of research/evaluation of such programs and analyze health outcomes.
