Position Summary

The Department of Pathology & Immunology at WashU Medicine seeks a collaborative and strategic business leader to serve as Director, Business Operation – Genomic and Molecular Pathology (GMP). Responsible for managing, directing, and executing strategies that support the growth, financial sustainability, and operational expansion of genomic and molecular diagnostic testing. Partners with GMP Division faculty, laboratory leadership, departmental leadership, and hospital stakeholders to coordinate financial, billing, reimbursement, contracting, and business development initiatives across organizational boundaries.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

• Strategic Growth: Develops and implements short- and long-term business strategies for genomic and molecular diagnostic services, identifying opportunities to expand testing within the health system and through external strategic partnerships.
• Financial Analysis & Performance: In conjunction with departmental finance teams, develops business cases, financial models, and operational metrics for new tests, instrumentation, and programs. Monitors financial performance to manage controllable losses related to test utilization, workflow, and reagent costs.
• Budgeting & Operations: Prepares, coordinates, and prioritizes financial operations for the division's operating budget, overseeing annual budget preparation and quarterly reporting while working collaboratively with the departmental finance team.
• Reimbursement Strategy: Works with laboratory leadership, revenue-cycle teams, and managed-care teams to develop and assess payer reimbursement strategies, covering coding, pricing, coverage policies, and changes in the market environment.
• Stakeholder Collaboration: Establishes and maintains productive relationships with clinical laboratories, physicians, and service-line leaders to better understand diagnostic needs and support shared-responsibility institutional functions.
• Expansion Planning: Partners with departmental leadership to develop a long-term laboratory growth plan, assessing testing volumes, capacity requirements, space, staffing, technology, and capital asset needs.
• Contracts & Agreements: Evaluates, supports, and helps negotiate strategic laboratory relationships, collaborations, service agreements, and contracts in partnership with institutional/departmental legal, finance, and contracting teams.
• Committee Representation: Represents the GMP Division on appropriate departmental, School of Medicine, hospital, and health-system committees related to laboratory strategy, growth, and financial performance.

Salary Range

$110,300.00 - $194,200.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
