A Hands-On Role Caring for Our Community's Spaces

Tenterfield Shire Council is seeking a full-time Parks & Gardens Operative (Maintenance), based in Tenterfield, NSW. Reporting to the Parks & Gardens Coordinator, you will help ensure that Council's parks, gardens, sports grounds, open spaces, and street and village landscapes are maintained to a high standard.

This is a varied, outdoor role suited to someone who enjoys practical, physical work and takes pride in the appearance and upkeep of shared community spaces. No two days are quite the same, with tasks ranging from mowing and pruning to plant operation, cemetery maintenance and general labouring.

Your key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Operate small plant, hand tools and attachments safely, including ride-on mowers, chainsaws and brush cutters
  • Conduct pre-start checks on plant and equipment and report faults promptly
  • Prune trees, remove green waste and complete plantings and streetscape maintenance
  • Maintain Council amenities, facilities and the Tenterfield Cemetery to a high standard
  • Assist with the implementation of traffic control plans
  • Support additional operational activities including animal impounding, waste management, noxious weeds management and saleyards
  • Carry out all work in an efficient, organised and cost-effective way
  • Contribute to a safe workplace by following WHS policies and EEO principles

Could This Be You?

You'll hold a Certificate II in Horticulture, or bring equivalent experience and knowledge in parks, gardens, sportsgrounds or public facilities maintenance and construction. You'll also have:

  • The ability to operate and carry out user maintenance on plant, equipment and hand tools
  • Sound verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to build productive working relationships
  • Physical capability to carry out general labouring and manual handling tasks safely
  • An understanding of WHS and EEO principles as they apply in the workplace
  • Strong problem-solving ability
  • A current Class C Driver's Licence
  • A Construction Induction (White) Card
  • A Traffic Control Card, or the ability to obtain one

Candidates with the following will be highly regarded:

  • Plant certificates of competence
  • An LR/MR driver's licence or equivalent
  • First Aid, Chemcert or Chainsaw Level 1 certification
  • Knowledge of gardening techniques
